Central Committee on Military Duty of the Vilnius Governorate Nobility Deputies' Assembly
1808
1816
3,158 files
The collection of the Central Committee on Military Duty includes a variety of materials which, along with data on the 1812 French invasion, contains a wealth of information on economic, cultural and social realities in the former governorates of Hrodna, Kaunas, Minsk and Vilnius and the oblast of Bialystok.

Jewish-related materials in the collection include records of the damage inflicted on Jewish households and communities in localities including Vilnius and Brest. The data is arranged in tables (in some cases, the files also include first-person testimonies, as in the case of the merchant Yosel Salitanov from Vidzy). The surveys of damages often include lists of names and detailed data on damaged property.

Some files contain data on money and property seized by the invading army, records on compensation for damages incurred by the war and documents (invoices, lists and correspondence) which refer to contractors and suppliers of the Russian army. Certain documents refer to matters of taxation.
Prior to the 1917 revolution, the records of the Russian administration in Vilnius were kept in a separate government depository. In the early 1920s they were transferred to the newly established Vilnius State Archive, which became a part of the Central State Archive of the Lithuanian SSR in 1940. In 1957, together with other pre-revolutionary documentation, these materials were included in the Central State Historical Archive of the Lithuanian SSR, predecessor of the current State Historical Archive.
The Central Committee on Military Duty was formed in May 1812 on the eve of Napoleon's invasion of Russia. The committee's jurisdiction extended to the governorates of Hrodna, Kaunas, Minsk, Mogilev and Vilnius and the oblast of Bialystok. It monitored damage and casualties of war in the region, based on reports from the various districts (uyezdy). The committee finished its work in 1816.
