Scope and content:: Journal / scrapbook (circa 80pp ms) compiled by Arthur Hirst (Hirschfeld) as a record of his internment as a German-Jewish refugee in the UK and in Australia during the Second World War, describing his arrest in June 1940 and brief internment in the Lingfield Racecourse camp before being transported to Australia in HMT DUNERA, arriving there in September 1940, and his internment in Hay and Tatura Camps until 1942 (? the journal is incomplete, but includes numerous sketches and ephemera from the two Australian camps, including handmade camp money, tickets for various entertainments, cards, plans of the camps etc); photocopied 'Nominal Roll of Internees transferred from the United Kingdom to Australia per HMT DUNERA' (25pp, ? February 1941); photocopied editions of 'Dunera News' (1986-1990); 50th anniversary brochure 'Arrival of HMT DUNERA' (Hay-Tatura Association 1990). Also documents concerning his father, Max Hirschfeld, who lost his life in the ARANDORA STAR when it was sunk by enemy action in July 1940, comprising: 2 German passports issued to him in Essen in 1935 and 1938 (both stamped with 'J', one stamped 'Ungueltig' /Invalid); copy of the passenger death certificate issued by the Office of Shipping & Seamen (December 1940); copy photograph of Max Hirschfeld; copy of his entry in the Yad Vashem records; copy of Hirschfeld family tree.
