- This collection is the result of a project for Year 11 students at the Archway School, Gloucester run by careers teacher, Robert Willey. The remit of the project was memories of the day that the Second World War began, 3 September 1939 and the intention was to produce a book, raising money for UNICEF with the profits. More than 400 contributions form the basis of this collection, and the sources approached ranged from the military services in the UK and Europe to well-known personalities, statesmen and VC holders; indeed many contributors heard of the project by word of mouth.Memories took the form of letters, accounts, excerpts from existing publications, and copies of original diaries, with a variety of detail covering service and civilian life during the war mostly in the UK, but also in France, Poland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Norway and Germany. It covers in varied detail different facets of service and civilian life during the Second World War, with particularly good accounts of Polish and Czech experiences and of Jewish refugees to England. The resulting publication From All Sides was published in 1989, in time for the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, and used around 100 accounts and memoirs.
