Private Papers of Mr and Mrs I Teich-Birken

Scope and content:: Photocopies (116pp) of letters written in German between February and ?November 1941 by a Jewish couple in Berlin to their daughters in New York (with transcriptions and translations of each letter), mainly documenting their attempts to obtain visas for entry to the United States, exhorting their children to do everything they can to help them and voicing their frustration at the absence of progress in this regard, and giving family news (they were deported to the Lodz ghetto shortly after the last letter was written, and perished in the Chelmno camp); also six photographs of the Teich-Birken family before the war.

Administrative/biographical history:: The material was presented in the form of a memorial book dedicated to the parents, Isaak David and Martha Teich-Birken, by Martin Teich-Birken. It was originally housed in the Wiener Library series: Unpublished Memoirs No. 4060 [20355]. It was a collaborative effort on the part of the siblings. The original correspondence had remained with sister, Adele. The collection was produced in part as a response to a request from the Freie Universität, Berlin which was collating material for their project: _Gedenkbuch- Schicksal der Berliner Juden_.
