- 44 excellent ms letters (96pp) written in Dutch with ts translation (47pp) from an elderly Dutch lady living in Amsterdam to her daughter and family in London (February 1942 - May 1945) describing civilian conditions in Holland under the German occupation, including her voluntary move into rooms in a convent in Amsterdam for warmth and food, the treatment of Jewish people, the requisitioning of all property by the German forces, the scarcity of food and the rising Black Market prices, her hopeful expectation of the Allied invasion and disappointment at the long time spent waiting for liberation, the restriction of essential amenities, atrocities committed by the German Army, and her jubilation when the war finally ended. The letters also show the strength of her religious beliefs and include details of the silent processions made through the city devoted to prayer.
