- In preparation for his painting, 'Hiroshi and Marcia' 1981, Alex Katz made nine preliminary ink studies of the silkscreen printer Hiroshi Kawanishi and his wife Marcia. These four drawings come from that group of studies. The painting was presented to Tate in 1983 by Paul Schupf (Reference T03805).For a full description of the painting see Tate Gallery 'Illustrated Catalogue of Acquisitions 1982-84,' page 211. The painting is titled 'Hiroshi and Marsha' in this catalogue but a letter from the artist to the Archive, 23 July 1993, confirmed the correct title to be 'Hiroshi and Marcia'.
