- Includes a series of ten proof screenprints, together with one related printed sheet, concerning his work titled, 'Oxford Gardens'.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Ivor Abrahams was born in Wigan, Lancashire, in 1925. He attended St Martin's School of Art 1952-1953, and Camberwell School of Art 1954-1957. Abrahams had a preference for sculpture (influenced by his partial colour blindness) and travelled extensively through Europe whenever possible. His early work was largely figurative, later moving towards works representing gardens and classical landscapes. These sculptures varied in scale from small dioramas to large installations, reproducing lawns, shrubbery, garden walls and flowers, created from a variety of materials painted in bright colours. Abrahams also produced a series of beach and sea sculptures, again reproducing the landscape but often populated with swimmers and sun-bathers. He then returned to figure sculptures, until changing style again, drawing on his local environment to produce buildings, gardens and domestic interiors. His more recent works involve photographic images, manipulated and constructed to create three dimensional forms, and sculptures in clay or resin, sometimes painted, patinated or cast in bronze. His interest in advertising placards led to him working as a display artist for Adéle Rootstein in the late 1950's. Abrahams has spent time working and living in both Britain and the Mediterranean, the latter having a noticable influence on his later work. Abrahams still works as a sculptor, painter, a printmaker and taught sculpture during the late 1950's and early 1960's.
