- Administrative/biographical history:
- Lady Jill Ritblat, born 14 December 1942, is a former barrister and one of the foremost collectors of contemporary art in the UK. In 1964 she gained a pupillage to Robin Simpson QC at Victor Durand and Jeremy Hutchinson's Chambers, where she worked until 1965. She also served as an alternate delegate for the International Council of Jewish Women at the UN in Geneva from 1977-9. However, it is for her work in the arts that Jill Ritblat is most noted. As a founding member of the Patrons of New Art, later Tate Patrons, she acted as the group's events organiser from 1984-7 and became chair of the group from 1987-90. During her time as chair, she represented the Patrons of New Art as a Turner Prize judge in 1988, as well as becoming involved in acquisitions, international relations and curating. In addition to being a member of many committees, such as the Friends of the Tate Gallery, Modern Art Oxford, and the International Council of the Jerusalem Museum, Jill Ritblat has co-curated shows such as The Curator's Egg at the Anthony Reynold's Gallery (1994), and One Woman's Wardrobe at the Victoria and Albert Museum (1999), winning a Silver Award for Graphic Design. She was executive producer of the film 'Normal Conservative Rebels: Gilbert and George in China', a piece that won a Gold medal at the Chicago Film Festival in 1996.Her passion for art is matched by her enthusiasm for music and architecture. She has been on the Development Committee of the Royal Academy of Music since 2002, and was a Royal Institute of British Architects Regional Awards assessor in 2001.She is married to Sir John Ritblat, Honorary President and former Chairman and CEO of The British Land Company PLC.
