- Arnold Sorsby (1900-1980) was an opthalmologist who published works on genetics, blindness, medical history and poetry. He gained his MRCS and LRCP in 1925, became a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of both England and Edinburgh in 1928 and got his MD in 1929.Born in Bialystock, Poland on 10 June 1900 to Jocob Sourasky and his wife Elka (Slomiansky), Sorsby changed his surname by deed poll around 1930. He was educated at a community school in Antwerp, the Central High School in Leeds and Leeds University, where he gained his MB and ChB, and went on to become opthalmic surgeon to the London Jewish Hospital, the Hampstead General Hospital and the West End Hospital for Nervous Diseases.From 1931 to 1966 he was surgeon at the Royal Eye Hospital and was Dean of its medical school from 1934 to 1938. From 1943-1966 he was Research Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal Eye Hospital, becoming Emeritus Professor on Retirement. He was a Hunterian Professor of RCSEng in the years 1934 and 1942 and was awarded the Sir Arthur keith medal in 1966, the same year he was appointed as CBE in respect of his national and international service to opthalmology.He worked for the WHO advisory panel on trachoma, the International Organiastion against Trachoma and the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness. He was also director of the Wernher Research Unit on Othalmological Genetics (MRC) and consultant advisor to the Ministry of Health (1966-1972).Sorsby was editor of the 'Journal of medical genetics' between 1964 and 1969 and edited the text book 'Modern Opthalmology' . His publications included 'Opthalmic genetics' (1951), 'Clinical genetics' (1953), 'A short history of opthalmology' (1933), 'Medicine and mankind' (1950) and 'Tenements of clay' (1974).He married Charmaine Guiness in 1943 and she predeceased him by a few days. There were no children. He died on 6 May 1980, aged 79.
