- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Grocers’ Company School, founded in 1876, became known as Hackney Downs School in 1889 when it came under the control of the London County Council. In the early 20th century, the academic record and intellectual culture of the School was excellent, although it remained formally a ‘standard’ grammar school. Demographic change in the 1930s resulted in many working class Jewish families moving to the borough and, consequently, the majority of the pupils at Hackney Downs in this period were Jewish boys. At one time, it was even known locally as ‘the Jewish Eton’, with famous alumni including Harold Pinter and Steven Berkoff. The school closed in 1995.
