- Most of this collection relates to Sally and Louis’ terms as Mayor of Hackney.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Louis Sherman was born in Whitechapel, London in 1914 to a working class Jewish family. Trained as a taxi driver, Sherman served in the National Fire Service during World War II, but was invalided out and returned to taxi driving after 1945. Elected MP for Hackney in 1953, he became Alderman in 1959, leader of the council from 1957-60 and mayor in 1961, taking over the latter appointment from Sally Sherman (née Parris, b. 1916), his wife, who held the office from 1960-1. Lou Sherman, as he was known, was Chairman of the London Boroughs Association from 1971-78. Sherman was knighted in 1975 and awarded OBE in 1967. He died in 2001.
