- Mark Blaug, 1927-2011, British economist, was born Norbert Blauaug, in the Hague, Netherlands (naturalised 1982). He was the second son of Berl Blauaug (later Bernard Blaug), a Jewish raincoat manufacturer from Austro-Hungary, and his English wife, Sarah, née Toeman. Although raised Jewish, Mark abandoned Judaism by the age of twelve and by seventeen was an atheist. In 1955 he received his PhD from Columbia University in New York under the supervision of George Stigler. He held academic appointments at Yale University, the University of London, the London School of Economics and the University of Buckingham. He was visiting Professor in the Netherlands, University of Amsterdam and Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where he was also co-director of CHIMES (Center for History in Management and Economics).
