- Bento Spinoza (or Baruch (Hebrew); Benedictus (Latin) Spinoza) was of Sephardic origin, born in Amsterdam in 1632 and an important member of the Portuguese Jewish community there. He was one of the most important and radical philosophers of the early modern period. His published works include Theological-Political Treatise (published anonymously) and, perhaps his greatest work, Ethics (published posthumously after his death in 1677).
