- Personal and professional papers of lawyer and judge Walter Raeburn covering his entire life from birth to death. Includes:- a large series of correspondence.- professional diaries detailing some of his cases.- publications collected whilst at Oxford University.- writings of a legal and philosophical nature as well as plays, poetry and prose.- family history papers that include details about his parents and grandparents.- a series of scrapbooks containing records produced and collected by Raeburn that document the different stages of his life.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Walter Raeburn (1897-1972) was born in London to naturalised German-Jewish parents. He attended University College School, London and then Charterhouse as a Pageite, leaving in 1915 and changing his surname from Regensberg to Raeburn. He applied to join the army and was appointed a 2nd lieutenant in the Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, serving in France and being wounded on the first day of the Somme. He returned to England to recover and then served in the RAF Cadet brigade until 1919. Raeburn resumed his education, studying History at Christ Church, Oxford, and then training to be a lawyer. He was called to the Bar in 1922.Raeburn joined the Labour Party in 1923 and stood as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Horsham and Worthing between 1925 and 1927. He was a founding member of the Society of Labour Candidates (now the Labour Party Association), the Haldane Club (now the Haldane Society) and the Society of Labour Lawyers.He married Dora Hedley Williams in 1925 and between 1927 and 1947 they had four sons and three daughters (one of whom died soon after birth), adopted a baby girl from Austria and took in Raeburn's cousin as a refugee from Nazi Germany.In 1928, Raeburn briefly abandoned law for a period at the London Press Exchange, but he returned to the Bar in 1930. In 1947 he took silk and was appointed a King's Counsel. In the same year he also embarked on postgraduate research study at the London School of Economics under Otto Kahn-Freund and Glanville Williams.In 1948 he became Recorder of West Ham until the post was abolished in 1965. As a judge he sat on a number of notable tribunals, including the Performing Rights Tribunal (1958-1969). He was frequently appointed to sit as Special Commissioner in Divorce. He was very involved with borstals and approved schools and took a special interest in the cases of young offenders with a view to rehabilitation and reform.His activities outside of work and family life included play-writing, amateur dramatics and collecting china. He was active in his local church and frequently delivered sermons. He was also the governor of a number of schools.
