- Born in 1896 into a family with Jewish background; educated at the Grocers' Company's School, Hackney Downs; civil service, 1912-1916; active service in France as a lieutenant (Territorial Army) in the Royal Garrison Artillery, 1916-1918; Exeter College, Oxford, 1919; assistant lecturer in English at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, 1921-1924; assistant lecturer in English at King's College, University of London, 1924-1928; lecturer in English, 1928; first Montefiore Professor of English in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Palestine, 1942-1945; returned to England, 1945; chair of English Language and Literature at Queen Mary College, University of London, 1952-1964; retired from the chair and appointed Professor Emeritus, 1964; died, 1973.
