- This collection contains three separate lectures on Dreams and the Unconscious and Introduction to Metapsychology and five boxes of papers, case histories, personal memorabilia, manuscripts and correspondence:PE/KLA/A1 contains Klauber's work on psychosomatic medicine, including case histories CONFIDENTIAL from Central Middlesex Hospital, correspondence relating to hospital work and applications for grants, referral lettersPE/KLA/A2 contains Klauber's reprints of papers in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and other publicationsPE/KLA/A3 contains further reprints from papers in journals, many in German. Includes a letter regarding election to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, CV, list of publications, certificate of Officer's Training Corps whilst at St. Paul's School and correspondence with The Lancet.PE/KLA/A4 contains draft papers on the bluebeard work, press cuttings and other notes for the paper on damnation, a draft obituary of Agnes Bene-Moses, letters of appreciation for 'Some little described elements of the psychoanalytic relationship with therapeutic implications'.PE/KLA/A5 contains further drafts and correspondence relating to publications of the book and notes and commentaries for articles contained in PE/KLA/A3.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- John Klauber was born in Hampstead on 1 January 1917 to a Hungarian Jewish family. He attended St. Paul's School in London and then studied history at Christ Church College, Oxford. During the war he served as captain in the army largely in the Middle East. It was during this time that he read Freud, whose writing he had first encountered whilst at Oxford. After the war he studied psychoanalysis and medicine concurrently, the latter at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School. His training at the British Psychoanalytical Society began in January 1948. He qualified in November 1952. From that same year he was Senior House Officer at the Bethlem Royal Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital. He was a full-time analyst from 1953 onwards. He died, at the age of sixty-four, whilst serving as President to the British Psychoanalytical Society. He was married to Ruth Brook.
