The collection ‘Administrative Documents 1469-1786’ comprises Jewish-related documents from 1735 to 1786. It is part of the extensive collection of ‘Documents of the congregation of nobilities the Jászkun District 1413-1847’.
The document collection in the Jászkun district archives differs from the collections of other county archives. Due to the privilege of the local inhabitants, the Jazygians and the Cumans, the members of the General Assembly did not come from the ranks of the nobility but represented the wealthy landowners. However, the administrative and legislative powers of the district provided the same right to represent interests as in other counties.
The collection refers to the subject of record entries in the years mentioned in the title. However, the file has survived from an earlier period than the records. The closing date of the collection is 1786, as a result of the arrangement of the records. Documents from the administrative units established as a result of reforms by Joseph II. and the document collection created after 1790 form a separate unit in the collection of administrative documents.
The collection can be divided into several units. As a result of the subject grouping of the file, five subgroups can be distinguished:
Capsa “A” includes the correspondence of district captains, orders, circulars, lawsuits regarding borders, miscellaneous catalogues, accounts and drafts. The timescale of the documents is 1702-1788 (exceeding the year cycle indicated in the title). The collection comprises merely two documents in relation to the Jewish society. It discusses taxation issues in 1746 and 1755.
Capsa “B” includes censuses and accounts from 1629-1779. There are no Jewish-related documents in this unit, due to two reasons: the settlement of Jews in the district was not large, and some of the documents were classified as documents created later (under a different heading).
Capsa “C” includes documents sent to the district in the period of 1573-1786. The transcripts deal with cases of migration, economic issues, penalties, collections, personal descriptions, conversion, deadline settings and robberies. The majority of Jewish-related collection can be found here. Documents are available under 183 headings as orphans or extensive files. The first Jewish-related document relates that Charles III. ordered the population census of the Jews in the district in 1735 (1735 Capsa 1. Fasc. 2. No 23.). The subject of the documents are diverse: census of Turkish Jewish dependents, farming leases, inn-keeping rights, commercial transactions, investigation, requisition, punishment, fake money, escapees, tobacco trade and robbery. The documents contain both national and district cases. The sources highlight mostly the roles of males in economic matters. The languages used are German, Hungarian and Latin.
Capsa “D” includes petitions, wills, submissions, relations, foundation matters and conscriptions from 1469-1786. Jewish-related documents in the collection can be found under about 19 headings. The first document is from 1746 and discusses the case of the introduction of the tolerance tax (1746 Capsa 3. Fasc. 3. No 33.). Further documents are mostly limited to Jewish-related issues of taxation, settlement and personal descriptions.
The fifth group is without a heading, and it includes documents of private law matters from the period of 1413-1786. Jewish-related sources can be found under 8 headings. The first is from 1773, focusing on the commercial activities of Samuel Lazar, a salesman from Aszód (1773. Capsa 2. Fasc. 4. No 1.). In addition, contracts, criminal cases and passport applications of private individuals can be found in the collection.
- Archival history:
-
Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county was founded in 1876 with its seat in Szolnok. The county includes the Jászkun District, and Külső-Szolnok part of Heves and Külső-Szolnok counties. The establishment of the county archives was ordered by Queen Maria Theresa. The legal predecessor of the archive was established in 1751 at the headquarters of the Jászkun District in Jászberény. The county records were collected here. The well-organised collection was transferred to the Szolnok county archives in 1878. The document collection was moved to the building of the Szolnok Financial Administration under the name Szolnok County Public Archives in 1950. Later the county court building was designated as the maintenance site for the archival materials in 1917. The construction of a new building was decided in 1952 and it was completed by 1980. The building - explicitly for the maintenance of archival materials - is located at 40-42 Pozsonyi Street.
The collection contains very few documents from the period before Mohács. However, it became extensive from the 18th century. (As a result of territorial reclassification in the Heves county archives, documents related to Szolnok county can also be found.) The composition of the documents maintained in Szolnok county is closely related to the changes in the administrative boundaries from period to period. Deaccessioning in 1914 and 1928 and ‘paper collection’ in 1946 and 1947 caused irreparable deficiencies in the case files.
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
No precise data are available on the date of the establishment of Jászkun District as an administrative authority. The collection of documents on the Jazygians and Cumans may have started as early as 1741 when the district received its seal from Queen Maria Theresa. The archive was first mentioned in 1751 when the Queen ordered the establishment of an archive. The material of the district was sorted in 1825, and the handbooks are still usable.
Destruction in 1914 affected the material from the district for the period 1850-1876. War damages caused irreparable deficiencies in the records.

- System of arrangement:

The administrative documents were arranged by their subjects. Six subject sub-groups were formed during the arrangement of the files; however, their classification is inconsistent. The following sub-groups exist:
a) Correspondence of district captains, mixed legislative and administrative documents 1741-1788. The heading of the document collection is “A”. The material can be grouped into capsae, fasciculi and numeri. The capsae (volumes) were arranged by their subject, while the fasciculi and numeri are ordered by years.
b) Census, accounting, 1629-1786. The collection of files is available under heading “B”. Under the alphabetical marking, the fasciculi and numeri were arranged in chronological order.
c) Transcripts sent to districts 1753-1786. The collection of files is available under heading “C”. In addition to the transcriptions, documents containing measures can be found in only a few cases. The material can be grouped into capsae, fasciculi and numeri. The files are in chronological order.
d) Applications, wills, submissions, relations, foundation matters, conscriptions, 1469-1786. The collection of files is available under heading “D”. The material can be grouped into capsae, fasciculi and numeri. The files are in chronological order.
e) Private law issues, 1413-1786. The collection has its own handbook. It has no distinctive alphabetical marking. The material can be grouped into capsae, fasciculi and numeri. The files are in chronological order.
- Finding aids:
- Handbooks attached to the collection of records are available. 19 index books, 1 index on private law matters and a related volume of subject, name and place name indexes are available to researchers. The index books also include the resolutions of the congregations and the number of the related documents.
