- The collection includes MA theses written after World War II on Jewish history, culture and tradition. The subject matter of the works is diverse, including the history of Jews, their presence in literature and culture (painting, philosophy), the founding of the state of Israel and its contemporary problems. Some of the works are devoted to aspects of religious life and relations with the Catholic Church. Some of the authors of the MA theses continued their academic career, becoming respected researchers of the culture and history of Polish Jews. This group includes: Bożena Szaynok "Pogrom Żydów w Kielcach 4 VII 1946” (Pogrom of the Jews in Kielce on 4 July 1946), Marcin Wodziński "Groby cadyków w Polsce” (Graves of tzaddikim in Poland), Natalia Aleksiun-Mądrzak "Emigracja Żydów z Polski w latach 1945-1949” (Emigration of the Jews from Poland in the years 1945-49), Alina Skibińska "Życie gospodarcze Żydów w świetle relacji polskich XIX wieku” (Economic Jewish life as seen in the Polish accounts of the 19th century), Joanna Lisek "Sacrum w twórczości Maurycego Szymla” (Sacrum in Maurycy Szymel’s work), Joanna Nalewajko-Kulikov "Żydzi po "Aryjskiej stronie” Warszawy w świetle pamiętników i wspomnień 12.10.1940-1.08.1944” (Jews on the "Aryan side” of Warsaw in diaries and memoirs from 12 October 1940 to 1 August 1944), Ewa Koźmińska-Frejlak "Polsko-żydowskie rozrachunki wojenne. Wyzwania holocaustu. Analiza listów do redakcji "Tygodnika Powszechnego” nadesłanych w odpowiedzi na dyskusję Błoński - Siła-Nowicki” (Squaring Polish-Jewish war accounts. Analysis of the letters sent to "Tygodnik Powszechny” in response for the discussion between Jan Błoński and Władysław Siła-Nowicki), Renata Piątkowska "Maurycy Gottlieb 1856-1879”, Jakub Petelewicz "Społeczność żydowska w Łowiczu 1918-1945” (Jewish community in Łowicz, 1918-1945), Artur Markowski ("Wasilków na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Przestrzenie i społeczeństwo sztetł” (Wasilków at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The shtetl’s space and society), Grzegorz Krzywiec "Obraz Żyda w prasie ziemiańskiej drugiej połowy XIX wieku (na przykładzie "Niwy”, "Roli” i "Wieku”) (Image of Jews in the landed gentry’s press of the second half of the 19th century, based on the periodicals "Niwa”, "Rola” and "Wiek”), Grzegorz Berendt "Sytuacja ludności żydowskiej w Wolnym Mieście Gdańsku w latach 1933-1939” (Situation of the Jewish population in the Free City of Gdańsk in the years 1933-39), Adam Kopciowski "Żydzi w Lublinie w latach 1944-1949” (Jews in Lublin in the years 1944-49), Marcin Urynowicz "Żydzi w samorządzie miasta Kozienice w okresie międzywojennym 1919-1939” (Jews in the self-government of the town of Kozienice in the interwar period 1919-39), Edward Kopówka "Życie polityczne i kulturalne Żydów w Siedlcach w latach 1918-1939” (Jewish political and cultural life in Siedlce in the years 1918-39), Jolanta Żyndul "Zajścia antyżydowskie w Polsce w latach 1935-1937” (Anti-Jewish riots in Poland in the years 1935-37); also: Jarosław Sellin "Kwestia żydowska w Polsce w dobie Sejmu Czteroletniego” (Jewish question in Poland at the time of Four-Year Sejm) and Albert Stankowski "Emigracja ludności żydowskiej z Pomorza Zachodniego w latach 1945-1960” (Emigration of the Jewish population from the Western Pomerania in the years 1945-60). Most of the master's theses in the collection were written and defended in Poland at state and private universities.
- Archival history:
- The collection includes works donated by the authors or sent to the Majer Bałaban competition organised by the Jewish Historical Institute since 1991 for the best MA and doctoral dissertations on Jewish subjects. The majority of the works are by graduates of Polish universities. The collection is open, and new works are added on an ongoing basis.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The idea of organising the competition was born in 1990 in connection with the general increase in interest in the Jewish studies after the fall of communism and the political transformation in 1989. The competition was held for the first time in 1991. It was to be organised every two years, but for financial reasons (lack of donors) took place irregularly. Its fifth edition took place in 2012; it has been held every two years since then. Since 2009, it has been named after Professor Majer Bałaban, who in the interwar period taught, among others, at the Institute of Judaic Studies, the current seat of the Jewish Historical Institute.
