- Archival history:
- The documentation was stored in the office (Landratsamt) of the head of the county (landrat), which was, under the order of the Prussian king, originally located in Krobia (Kröben). As a result of the new administrative division, Rawicz became the central seat of the district authorities from 1887 to 1919. The local office produced and collected administrative documentation of Rawicz county (Kreis Rawitsch). The next stage was the establishment of the County Office in Rawicz in 1919. After the end of World War II, some of the collected materials were sent to the State Archives in Poznań (documents produced during the Prussian rule) and some were sent to the State Archives in Leszno (documents produced in the interwar period).
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
The legal basis for the organization of state administration in the Grand Duchy of Poznań attached to Prussia was provided by the decree of the King of Prussia of 30 April 1815. Under this decree, the principality was divided into two districts: Poznań and Bydgoszcz. Regions, in turn, were divided into counties each under a county head (landrat). The offices subordinate to them were called county offices (Landratsamt). This system lasted until 1919.
The county heads followed the recommendations of the superior authorities. Their competences included political, social, economic and cultural matters, matters of schools and churches in their area, teachers' and clergy's salaries. Rawicz County was established in 1816 on the basis of the order of the Prussian king introducing new administrative divisions of the lands allocated to Prussia under the Treaty of Vienna. Until 1887, the seat of the county authorities was Krobia. In 1887, changes were made to the administrative division of Poznań Province. Among other things, the territory of Krobia County was considerably reduced in favour of the newly created Gostyń County. The seat of the truncated county was moved to Rawicz, which remains the seat of the county authorities.
