- Scope and content:
- The collection contains documents (1445-1700): Town rights, property matters, lists of legitimate birthright. There appear not to have been any Jews in the town during this period, though they may possibly have appeared as witnesses. An archival enquiry did not turn up any Jewish-related records. Some of the names suggest the Jewish origin of their owners, but the content of the archival records does not allow for verification of this supposition.
- Archival history:
- The records were held in the Chobienia town archive. At the initiative of the state authorities in the second half of the nineteenth century, the documents were transferred in the form of a deposit to the State Archives in Wrocław and were referenced here as Rep. 132. They were taken to Wrocław during World War II. After the war, the records were taken over by the archival authorities of East Germany (later the German Democratic Republic). They were then taken back to Wrocław in 1980. A new inventory was compiled in 2017.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Chobienia is located on the Oder river. The Church of Mary Magdalene, first mentioned in 1259 and renamed as the Church of St. Giles from 1676, was under the protection of the town, which was its patron from 1300. Revenue from this church was collected by the collegiate church of Głogów. The town lands belonged to the von Dohn family. From 1504, the town became the property of the von Kottwitz family, which rebuilt the former castle of the Głogów princes into a Renaissance residence. The town was granted Magdeburg law in 1300. In the 16th century a new church of Sts. Peter and Paul was built for Protestants, in which Johann Heermann (1585-1647) was a known pastor and preacher. Catholics settled here after 1654. A new town hall was built on the market in the 18th century (Karol Gottard Langhans). The town was badly damaged during World War II. The town lost its town rights after 1945.
