The Jewish vital records district in Krakow issued birth, marriage and death records, and the records were maintained on behalf of the city hall by the plenipotentiary for Jewish vital records at the Municipality of Krakow, who also had the right to verify names changed by Jews. The official documents in this collection include Jewish poverty certificates, passports, municipal affiliation certificates and military taxes.

- Records of the Plenipotentiary for Jewish vital records at the City Council of Krakow were kept on a regular basis until 1939 in the storehouse of the Krakow City Hall. Some of the collection was lost when it was taken over by the German occupation authorities during the war. The records were taken over by the State Archives in Krakow after World War II.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- In approx. 1858, an official was appointed to supervise Jewish vital records in Krakow. However, the imperial-royal Ministry of Internal Affairs, Justice and Religious Denominations established a permanent Plenipotentiary for Jewish vital records at the Magistrate of the City of Krakow in 1875. The official languages of the records were Polish, German or Russian. The plenipotentiary was responsible for the Jewish vital record district in Krakow (from 1876 Krakow county, the Jewish religious community in the city of Krakow). As a rule, people of Jewish origin associated with local government were appointed to this office. This office operated until 1940, when it was dissolved by the German authorities. It was mainly involved in registering births, marriages and deaths in the vital records district, and was also responsible for preparing a periodic report for the Krakow magistrate regarding the migration of the Jewish population.
