The "Persecution of Jews in Germany" collection is part of the larger archive of the Union of Jewish Humanitarian Associations B’nai B'rith in the Polish Republic in Krakow. It covers Krakow, Zbąszyń, Berlin, Prague, Cincinnati, Katowice and Łódź.
For the most part, they are records created by the Association of Jewish Humanitarian Societies B’nai B’rith in Krakow in 1933-1934, when B’nai B’rith (BB) lodges organised a great effort to help German Jews persecuted by the Third Reich. The most valuable documents include correspondence with local aid committees, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (Joint), Prof. Majer Bałaban and Prof. Mojżesz Schorr and materials regarding the boycott of German goods.
BB 245 project to organise a protest action against the persecution of Jews in Germany (1933), a letter from the Krakow Merchants Association regarding a campaign to boycott German goods, a telegram from the Lodge of Great Britain and Ireland, excerpt from the minutes of the meeting of the Humanitarian Association "Brotherhood" BB in Warsaw (1933) with the participation of Prof. Bałaban and Prof. Schorr on helping German immigrants, boycotting German goods and convening the Jewish Congress, reprints from the "Bnei Brith Magazine" newspaper about anti-Semitism in Germany, budget statements for 1933, letters from the Montefiore Bnei Brith Humanitarian Society (Dr. Braude).
BB 246 letters to the Grand Lodge in Czechoslovakia regarding the dissolution of lodges in Germany and the confiscation of their property, a letter to Senator Schorr to intervene in the Ministry of Interior, a letter to Senator Ringel regarding the magazine "Selbstwehr" published in Prague about the liquidation of lodges in Germany.
BB 247 letters regarding establishment of an Aid Committee for Refugees from Germany at Skawińska Street in Krakow, as well as a Central Committee for Aid to Jewish Refugees from Germany in Warsaw, invitations from Dr. Popper to discuss the establishment of a Jewish Aid Committee, letter from Marea Loja "Zion" (B’nei Brith lodge in Bucharest) regarding organisation of an international congress and providing help to German Jews, letters from the Austrian lodge.

Invitations to a congress of the committee for the care of refugees from Germany and letters regarding its organisation, letters on making donations for this committee (e.g. from the West Lesser Poland Association of Societies for Jewish Orphans, organisation of holidays and colonies for Jewish children from Germany in Rabka by the Rabka Society Health Colony for the Jewish School Children in Krakow, letters from the Jewish community in Katowice to B’nei Brith in Krakow regarding the granting of financial assistance through the intermediary of the Concordia lodge, letters regarding the economic situation of Jewish immigrants from Germany staying in France, letters from Dr. Leo Kaufmann to the General Director of the Joint Distribution Committee American Jewish Department in Europe (Paris) with a request to increase subsidies for Jewish refugees in Katowice, protocol of the conference of delegates of Jewish committees to help refugees from Germany, information on the number of returnee immigrant families and organisation of aid, report on discussions in the "Achduth" Lodge on anti-Semitism in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
BB 253 Persecution of Jews in Germany. Aid Committee in Zbąszyń. B’nai Brith's correspondence with Mojżesz Schorr regarding the expected emigration of Jews to Poland, a letter from the Board of the Jewish Community in Zbąszyń, a letter from the Lodge of Amicitia in Poznań regarding the organisation of help for Jewish returnees from Germany staying in Zbąszyń.
BB 254 Letters from the Verein zur Abwehr des Antisemitismus in Berlin (1930) to Dr. Leon Ader, his VZADA membership card, letters regarding the anti-Semitism magazine "Abwehrblätter", misallocated postcards (photos) of the decor of the ceremonial hall of the Schlaraffia Association in Krakow and the wedding of one of the members of the Schlaraffia Humanitarian Association in Krakow.
BB 256 information from the B’nai Brith "Montefiore" lodge in Łódź about a meeting agenda, letters from the lawyer Steinberg regarding the organisation of an effort by the Romanian lodge "Emunah" to fight anti-Semitism.
- Archival history:
- The records of the association of the Union of Jewish Humanitarian Associations B’nai Brith in the Polish Republic were taken over by the Grodzkie Starostwo in 1940 and in the same year by the State Archives in Krakow. They were stored in a depot at 54 Grodzka Street. Some of the records were taken over in 1951-1952 by the Security Committee in Warsaw. In 1957, the records were taken over by the Central Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw. There, they were partially lost and, additionally, some were destroyed when they were returned to the State Archives in Krakow. In the years 1958-1983 the B’nai Brith fonds was included in the Starostwo Grodzkie collection in Krakow.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Jewish Association B'nai B'rith in the Republic of Poland (Polin Lodge), which is a branch of the international association B'nai B'rith, was founded in Krakow in 1922. It was a Jewish charitable and cultural organisation of a Masonic nature, which was involved in organizing financial assistance for victims of war, political refugees, widows, orphans. The Krakow lodge was founded in 1892. The headquarters was located at Gertrudy st. 7. In 1892-1922 it was subordinated to the Grand Lodge in Vienna and then to the General Committee of the Grand Lodge in Poland. Krakow B’nai B’rith was dissolved by presidential decree in 1938 and reactivated in 2007. The operation of aid to German Jews affected by anti-Semitic persecution after the Nazis came to power was organised in 1933-1934.
