The Krakow Voivode, with the help of an auxiliary apparatus that was the Voivodship Office, ensured public safety and order in the province, supervised police activity, as well as associations, press publishing houses, organisation of mass events (including demonstrations), issued passports, oversaw the movement of people, procedures for granting citizenship, name changes; construction; cases related to refugees, issued concessions, oversaw social and health care, and also conducted activities aimed at combating usury.
In each of these areas, the contribution of the Jewish population was very visible; it constituted about 5% of the population of Krakow province in the interwar period, and as much as 25% in Krakow alone. That is why the majority of Jewish-related records concerns Jewish activities in large towns of Krakow province, i.e. Kraków, Tarnów, and Chrzanów. The most interesting relevant documents are from 1920-1939 and include concessions issued to Jews for conducting business activities (including the sale of alcohol), minutes of meetings of the credit committee granting loans to Jewish entrepreneurs, reports on the state of employment in Jewish workplaces, and lists of Jewish workers prepared for the army.
Particularly useful for researching Jewish cultural, charitable, Zionist, sports and economic activities are the records of Jewish associations and societies, including "Jewish Culture" in Krakow, the Association of Religious Jews [Stowarzyszenie Zachowawcze Religijnych Żydów] - Machsike hadas in Tarnów, the "Ritual Kitchen for Jews residing in Public Hospitals in Krakow" Association, "Tikvah" Jewish Library and Reading Room in Trzebinia, Jewish Sports Association in Krakow, Jewish-Polish Political Club in Krakow, the Israeli Association "Bejt Hamidrash Hagadol" in Chrzanów, the "Hatzair" Sports Association in Tarnów, the Association of Merchants and Handicraftsmen in Zakopane.

- Administrative/biographical history:
-
The voivode was appointed by the president at the recommendation of the interior minister approved by the Council of Ministers. Personally, he was subordinate to the interior minister. In terms of service, he was subordinate to the relevant ministerial minister. The voivode had two roles. He was a government representative in the province and a superior in the general administration. Representing the government in the province, he coordinated the activities of the government administration, had supervisory powers over the independent administration, supervised the personnel and substantive policy of the voivodship administration.
As the head of general administration, he carried out tasks related to internal affairs, i.e., ensuring public order, authority over the police, supervision of the press and associations, local government bodies. The voivode had the power to issue executive and order regulations ensuring security and public order. He had a deputy voivode. The provincial office was the auxiliary apparatus of the voivode divided into faculties and branches. Collective advisory bodies, i.e., the Provincial Council and the Provincial Department, were under his purview.
Krakow Province in the Second Polish Republic was established in December 1920. Pursuant to the ordinance of the President of the Republic of Poland of 19 January 1928 "On the organisation and scope of operation of administrative authorities", the country was divided into 16 provinces.
