This fonds covers the area of Zakrzówek and Kapelanka. Zakrzówek is an area within Krakow that forms part of District VIII – Dębniki. A former Church-owned village, today it is a recreational area around a former limestone quarry. Kapelanka is a former manorial farm (grange).
Most of the extant Jewish-related material dates to the late 19th and first decade of the 20th century. It is mainly found in the correspondence register files, which specify the subject of the matter considered by the communal authorities, proposed options for the Commune to handle the matter in question, the authority and the parties receiving the letters, the subject of the complaint, dispute or problem. The other important sources include letters concerning local Jewish people to and from the following authorities and institutions: Communal Department of Wieliczka, kaiserlich und königlich (k.u.k.) - Archival history:
- The records of Zakrzówek were kept at the village’s chancellery. Around 1910, they were taken over by the Municipality Office (magistrat) of Krakow and, subsequently, by the City of Krakow’s Archives of Historical Records.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- A private village until the 15th century, Zakrzówek later became the property of the Krakow Cathedral Chapter. From 1772, resulting from the first Partition of Poland, Zakrzówek was part of Austria. The hamlet of Kapelanka housed a manorial farm that was an emolument of the Wawel Cathedral chaplains. 1866 saw the formation of a communal council and supreme authority, with the result that both villages were subordinated to the County Department of Wieliczka (in local government terms) and to the k.u.k. Starosty of Podgórze (in state structure terms). Kapelanka was eventually merged with Zakrzówek. The Act of 1868 turned county offices into starosties; the Starosty of Krakow was established, and the area of the County Office of Liszki and Mogiła was incorporated in it. Zakrzówek was officially made part of Krakow in 1910.
