- Administrative/biographical history:
- A War Crimes Inquiry Group reviewed over 400 cases pursuant to the War Crimes Act 1991 of alleged war crimes committed during the Second World War in Europe with a view to possible prosecution. A special unit of the Metropolitan Police was established to investigate these cases with a view to prosecution. On 15 April 1996, a British resident, Szymon Serafinowicz, was charged under this legislation with murder in violation of the laws of war and of the common law of three persons in 1941-1942 at a concentration camp in the Nazi-occupied Belarus during World War Two, whilst serving as a police chief. Serafinowicz was the first person to be charged under the 1991 War Crimes Act.
