- The archive is composed of five distinct sections: (i) Papers relating to the Anglo-Jewish exhibition for the Festival of Britain material, 1951, including posters, booklets on sections of the exhibition, invitations, programmes, letters and other papers; (ii) Correspondence relating to the meeting of B'nai B'rith to mark the centenary of Jewish parliamentary emancipation, 2 June 1958. Correspondents include Anthony Eden, Lord Cohen, Lord Reading, Keith Joseph, Lord Samuel, Clement Attlee, Hugh Gaitskell, Edmund de Rothschild, Lord Nathan and the secretaries of the Prime Minister and of Winston Churchill; (iii) Programmes, addresses, speeches by Harris, correspondence, press cuttings and other related papers, 1959-67, concerning the B'nai B'rith golden jubilee in 1960; (iv) Seven letters to Hugh Harris, c.1959-62, from Lord Nathan, Victor Gollancz, Pierre Mendes-France, Chief Rabbi Brodie and B B Benas; letter from Revd Simeon Singer to Revd Raphael Harris, 1 Oct 1888; (v) Papers relating to the Jewish Peace Society: cash book, 1914-58; reports, 1919-22; and correspondence, 1957-70.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Hugh Harris, BA, MLitt, was born in Liverpool in 1897. He was headmaster of West Hampstead Day School, 1933-8; chairman of the Jewish Peace Society, and literary editor of the Jewish Chronicle during the 1950s.
