- The collection comprises over five hundred handwritten sermons by Cohen, kept in the original numerical sequence, with notes of the times at which these were delivered. The sermons were mainly preached at Birmingham. Some of the items were published in Sabbath Sermons, selected by Chaim Pearl and Alex Tobais (Soncino Press, London, 1960) and there are numbers and notes on the front of the sermons that relate to the selection of items for this publication.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Rabbi Dr Abraham Cohen (1887-1957) was educated at the Universities of Cambridge and London. He served as senior minister at the Birmingham Hebrew Congregation for nearly forty years, before being elected as President of the Board of Deputies in 1949, an office he held for six years. Cohen was the author of some thirty books including Ancient Jewish Proverbs (1911), The Teachings of Maimonides (1927), as editor of the Soncino Books of the Bible (1945-51) and of the Soncino Pentateuch (1947).
