- Administrative/biographical history:
- Lionel Herbert Bloch (1928-98) was born in Bucharest to one of the sons of Les Freres Bloch, a well-known firm of jewellers. The Bloch family left Romania in 1948, following the seizure of power by the communists. Lionel Bloch made his way to Great Britain and attended the University of Birmingham. He supplemented his income by working first as a diplomatic correspondence on the Birmingham Post and later as London correspondence for the Jerusalem Post. A staunch Tory from his student days, as well as a noted Zionist and anti-communist, Bloch served as a member of the Trade Union Reform Committee of the Centre for Policy Studies. He worked as a solicitor and also served for many years as legal advisor to the Israeli embassy. Bloch was married to Eva Bell and subsequently, in 1966, to Suzanne Rosen. He died in 1998.
