- This collection comprises: General correspondence and papers, 1943-90 (12 files); two series of research materials, including papers relating to Jewish buildings and ritual baths, on Hebrew scholarship in the sixteenth century, and Jewish labour; papers relating to the New West End Synagogue, London, 1887-1979; ritual murder, and Jews in British urban society, 1880-1914 (23 files). Papers relating to his publications, 1981-9 (6 files). Papers relating to teaching and academic institutions, including papers for his course at University College, London, 1981-90 (9 files). Papers on the national heritage, architectural conservation, planning and historic buildings, 1970-89 (11 files). Correspondence and papers relating to the America-Holyland project, 1974-88, and Palestine Exploration Society statements, 1871-7 (8 files); papers for the Sir Moses Montefiore celebrations sub-committee of the JHSE, 1980-4, and the Festival of British Jewry committee, 1984-5 (9 files).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Vivian David Lipman (1921-90) obtained a DPhil in 1947, on ‘Problems of areas in English local government'. He served in the Royal Signals and Intelligence Corps, 1942-5. In 1947 Lipman entered the Ministry of Health and later served in the Ministries of Local Government and Planning, Housing and Local Government, and the Department of the Environment. In 1955, he was appointed Private Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Local Government. He was seconded to the Local Government Commission, 1958-63, was head of the London Planning Division, 1963-7, the Historic Buildings Division, 1968-72, and Under Secretary and Director of Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings, 1972-8. Lipman was President of the Jewish Historical Society of England, 1965-7; a member of the Research Board of the Institute of Jewish Affairs; Vice Chairman of the Research Committee of the Board of Deputies of British Jews; Vice President of the Ancient Monuments Society; and in 1979 he was appointed a member of the Redundant Churches Fund. Lipman wrote extensively on the history of Anglo-Jewry and promoted research. He was Honorary Research Fellow in Jewish History, Department of Jewish Studies, University College, London.
