- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Council for the Amelioration of the Legal Position of the Jewess was founded in 1922 by Miss L Hands. Its purpose was to press for such measures of relief as would bring practical help to Jewish women who, under existing laws, would be liable to suffer serious handicap; to consult with Jewish communal workers and organisations throughout the world respecting the legal disabilities of Jewish women; to consult with Jewish scholars regarding the best methods to employ to obtain the desired results; and to lay these considered demands ultimately before a world-wide assembly of orthodox rabbis.
