- This collection comprises documentation of several subjects and provenances, with a special emphasis on records related to religious institutions, the Royal House, the management of orphans’ assets, documents on agriculture and trade, contracts and decrees, and wills and diplomatic correspondence. Book 46, which contains letters of favours granted by King Manuel I to D. Jaime, the Duke of Braganza, includes a letter related to the incomes of the former "judiarias" and "mourarias" (Jewish and Muslim quarters) dated from December 15, 1500 (PT/TT/MMIP/46, fols. 49-50). D. Jaime had claimed the right to receive these incomes as they had belonged to his uncle, the Marquis of Montemor, of whom he was an heir. Therefore, King Manuel ordered their evaluation. The total amount was estimated at 1,487,700 "reais" (currency) per annum. The Jewish quarters considered in this evaluation were: Lisbon, Ourém, Porto de Mós, Barcelos, Guimarães, Chaves, Bragança, Alter do Chão, Monforte, Sousel, Vila Viçosa, Monsaraz, Portel, Vidigueira, Évoramonte, Arraiolos, Borba and Montemor.
- Archival history:
-
The history of this collection is still little known.
Possibly, some documentation was forgotten in the building of the Ministério do Reino (Ministry of the Kingdom) that was occupied by the Ministério da Instrução Pública (Ministry of Public Instruction). Therefore, some documents of this collection are related to the activity of the Ministério do Reino. It is also possible that the records of this collection and the Manuscritos vindos do Ministério do Reino (Manuscripts derived from the Ministry of the Kingdom) collection had composed a set of heterogeneous records under the custody of the Ministério do Reino. Books 25 to 28, with diplomatic correspondence, were transferred to the archive of the Secretaria de Estado dos Negócios do Reino (Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs) in 1855. Book 43 contains a reference to its previous owner: the library of the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça in Lisbon. Some documents of this collection were reintegrated in other fonds. This list can be found in the Torre do Tombo online database.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- In the second half of the 19th century, the central administration of Portugal was handled by secretaries of state and ministries, usually seven: Reino (Kingdom), Negócios Eclesiásticos e Justiça (Ecclesiastic Affairs and Justice), Fazenda (Finance), Guerra (War), Marinha e Ultramar (Navy and Overseas Territories), Negócios Estrangeiros (Foreign Affairs) and Obras Públicas (Public Works). The government tried two times to create a Ministério de Instrução Pública (Ministry of Public Instruction): in 1870 and 1890. However, due to political instability, demotivation and financial difficulties, this Ministry did not last for long. In the first time, it only operated for half a year. In the second time, it lasted two years. The affairs of public instruction always went back under the supervision of the Ministry of the Kingdom.
