- Administrative/biographical history:
- The first Jewish families appear to have arrived in South Shields in the 1840s but had no religious services of their own until about 1880 when services were held in a private house. Various halls were then used as temporary synagogues until a house in Charlotte Square was purchased in 1897. In the early 1900s there was a split in the community but this was resolved and in 1914 new premises were purchased in Ogle Terrace (later renamed Beach Road). These were demolished in 1932 and a new synagogue and communal hall built. By the late 20th century the congregation had dwindled to just a few families, and the synagogue closed in 1994.
