Scope and content:: This collection contains over a quarter of a million photographs, slides, prints, engravings, maps and other iconographic material. Most of these objects have been digitised and can be consulted (in low resolution) via the search engine on the website of the FelixArchief. For this guide, by searching the finding aid “Beeldbank AVA”, we note many relevant pictures and slides mainly dating back to the interwar years and the second half of the 20th century. We firstly find iconographic material concerning synagogues, Jewish schools, cemeteries and other religious buildings such as ritual baths. Religious themes such as i.a. Jewish marriages, Jewish religious services, rabbis, religious holidays etc. are also depicted. Relatively little relevant material is found for the immediate post-war period, although we do note photos concerning Allied soldiers and the Jewish community, and photos related to the homes for Jewish orphans. Another important topic is the daily life (e.g. pictures of the Jewish quarter in Antwerp, Jewish shops, etc.) and especially the rich Jewish associational life: we find photos of Jewish sporting clubs, cultural organisations, youth movements etc. and their activities. Lastly, we also point out the photographs of Jewish political movements (in particular Zionist groups) and demonstrations.
