- Administrative/biographical history:
- Yeshayah Zandberg was a Yiddish author of Polish origin, who settled in Belgium in 1919. Before the Second World War he was the director of a press agency and during the Occupation he operated a clandestine Yiddish library. He published many essays, articles and poems in Yiddish, mainly after the war. Zandberg was the president of the Cercle culturel Emmanuel Ringelblum and of the Association de Littérature yiddish de Bruxelles. He was also the co-founder of the theatre ensemble Yikult. Throughout his life he was committed to the preservation and dissemination of Yiddish as a language and culture. (J.-P. Schreiber, "Zandberg, Yeshayah", in J.-P. Schreiber, Dictionnaire biographique des Juifs de Belgique. Figures du judaïsme belge, XIXe-XXe siècles, Bruxelles, De Boeck, 2002, p. 370.)
