During the Second World War he fled to France where he joined the resistance. He enrolled at the opera in Lyon under his artist name Jacques Chalude. After the war, he also devoted himself to Jewish and Israeli folk songs, under the pseudonym Ben Baruch. In 1955 he became the hazan of the synagogue in the rue Notre Dame de Nazareth in Paris.
