- Administrative/biographical history:
- Robert Rothschild (1911-1978) was a Belgian diplomat of German-Jewish origin. During the Second World War he was arrested but released and fled into exile. He reached London from where the exiled government sent him to the diplomatic station in Lisbon until 1944, when he was sent to China. In 1950 he left Shanghai for Washington. He was appointed chief of the cabinet of Paul-Henri Spaak, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in 1954. He participated in the redaction of the Treaty of Rome in 1957 and in the establishment of the European Economic Community in 1958. He was then sent to the Belgian Congo as deputy to the Governor. He arrived shortly before Patrice Lumumba came to power. Later, Rothschild was sent to Switzerland where he became the president of the executive committee of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade; afterwards he was appointed to diplomatic posts in Paris and London, where he lived until his death in 1978.
