- Louis Meerts (1920-2007) was the national secretary of the ACW (Christian workers’ movement)(1946-1948) but is best known for his career in journalism, as the editor in chief of the Gazet van Antwerpen (1949-1985). In addition Meerts was active (often as president) in various press associations related to the Catholic movement (i.a. the press agency CIP and the Pontificia Commissione per le Comunicazioni Sociali). He was also a lecturer at the Katholieke Hogeschool Antwerpen and (from 1963) the Catholic university of Leuven, where he became associate professor at the faculty of Political and Social Sciences (1971-1988) and where he expanded the department of Communication Sciences. Meerts was involved in many Catholic organisations, among others the Antwerpse Contactgroep voor Joods-Christelijke betrekkingen. He received various decorations, such as Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (from France) and knight in the Order of Saint-Sylvester (Vatican City). (H. Van Cauwenberge & G.
