- Administrative/biographical history:
- The artist and painter Sarah Kaliski, of Polish nationality, was born at rue de la Tourelle 37 in Brussel on 8 September 1941. Her father Abram Kaliski was born in Lodz in 1908; he was deported and died in 1944. Her mother, Fradlo Wach, was born in Warsaw in 1901. Sarah descended from a family of artists. Her brother Chaïm is a draftsman, her brother René is a playwright and she is a painter. Sarah has painted many tragic historical figures – prophets, revolutionaries and great writers such as Rosa Luxemburg, Nietzsche, Kafka, Trotsky and Freud. Her expressionist work immediately met with critical acclaim. Her scenography and presentation of images is visionary. Death is one of her favourite themes – see her work “La classe des morts” – and she is fascinated by Kafka, Rimbaud, Simenon and Céline. She stopped painting on canvas and moved on to large tarpaulins, showing the scars of history. She also published more intimate works, such as notebooks, illustrated books where drawings are linked to sharp, rough writing, in which passion, violence, and passionate love are evoked. Kaliski has expressed herself poignantly concerning violence against children as well – for example with an exhibition of beds in a room closed to the public, a sacralised space, representing the beds of the dead children who will never sleep again.
