- Ernest Gorbitz (1922-1995), born in Frankfurt am Main to parents originating from Odessa, arrived in Belgium in 1924-1925. Although he was trained in jewellery making, etching and crimping, Gorbitz proved himself especially through his literary talents. An autodidact, he met many authors and was influenced by them – i.a. Albert Ayguesparse, Henri Bosquet, René Kalisky, Paul Fierens and Hélène Beer. He was a prolific author, publishing many novels, poems, chronicles and testimonies. Judaism, the Shoah, human misery and the fear of dying were central motifs of his work. He died in Brussels in 1995. (E. Wulliger, "Gorbitz, Ernest Berel", in J.-P. Schreiber, Dictionnaire biographique des Juifs de Belgique. Figures du judaïsme belge, XIXe-XXe siècles, Bruxelles, De Boeck, 2002, pp. 136-137.)
