- Gottlieb Gottschalk Glüge (1812-1898) was born in Westphalia in 1812. He held a degree in medicine and specialised in pathological anatomy. He moved abroad to be able to make a career in university teaching – first in France and later in Belgium, where the ULB invited him to take the Chair in Physiology in 1838. This specialist of the clinico-pathological was appointed full professor at the ULB in 1841 and rector in 1869-1870. As well as his brilliant career as a scientist, physician and professor, he was also appointed member of the administrative committee of the Jewish school in Brussels in 1848. (J.-P. Schreiber, "Glüge, Gottlieb Gottschalk", in J.-P. Schreiber, Dictionnaire biographique des Juifs de Belgique. Figures du judaïsme belge, XIXe-XXe siècles, Bruxelles, De Boeck, 2002, pp. 125-126.)
