These files date from the years 1942-1944.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Albert de Vleeschauwer van Braekel (1897-1971) obtained degrees in law and Thomistic philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he would later teach. From 1923 to 1960 he was inscribed at the Bar in Leuven. De Vleeschauwer van Braekel worked from 1923 onwards for the Belgische Boerenbond, i.a. in its documentation service. Between 1929 and 1930 he was head of the cabinet of the Ministry of Agriculture. Albert De Vleeschauwer van Braekel would play a major role in the Catholic Party in the 1930s: from 1932 he was a member of parliament, seated in various commissions of the party, and from 1936 he was a member of the Directorium of the Katholieke Vlaamse Volkspartij. Between 1940 and 1942 he was the Administrator-General for the Belgian Congo and Ruanda-Urundi; before that he had been Minister of Colonies in the Spaak government. Between 1940 and 1942 he was also responsible for the domain Justice and (from 1942) Public Education. De Vleeschauwer van Braekel held considerable power in his capacity of Minister of Colonies; his policy during the war showed a full commitment to the Allied war effort. In the post-war period he evolved into one of the main proponents of the return of king Leopold III. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs (1949-1950) and Agriculture (1958-1960). De Vleeschauwer van Braekel was in those years also administrator and advisor of several colonial companies. He received the title of baron in 1954. His resignation in the wake of the SOCOGA-scandal meant the end of his political career. (B.
