- In the archives of the cabinet of mayor Cools we find a few relevant files. They mostly contain various (police) reports, clippings, hand written notes, lists, correspondence, etc. Some are rather large and divided into subfiles. We note, among others, the files concerning: the bombing of the synagogue of the Sephardic community in the Hoveniersstraat on 20 October 1981 (no. 685 # 104), terrorism (1987-1994; no. 685 # 174), the diamond quarter and the diamond industry (1987-1994; no. 685 # 3) and the pilgrimage to Fort Breendonk and remembrance of the victims of the concentration camps (1994; no. 685 # 6). Lastly we also mention the documents concerning Cools’ New Year’s messages published in the Belgisch Israëlitisch Weekblad (1983 and 1984, see MA-KAB # 462 and MA-KAB # 464) and his speech at the Maccabi games (1983; no. MA-KAB # 462).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Bob Cools was born in 1934 and active in the socialist party since 1956. He started his career as an advisor at the Studiecentrum voor de Expansie van de Haven van Antwerpen (1959-1963) and the Federaal Planbureau (1963-1970). He was a member of the Antwerp city council (1971-1982), the president of the OCMW (1995-2001) but is best known for his terms as the mayor of Antwerp (1983-1994). Cools also was a member of parliament (1974-1982). Apart from his strictly political mandates he was also a commissioner for the Belgian railroad society NMBS (1966-1974), the president of the social housing company Onze Woning (1966-2004) and administrator of the Belgian airline company SABENA (1970-1975). In 2004 he obtained a PhD in political science at the VUB, where he also teaches. (L.
