- Serge Ben Chlepner was born in Iekaterinoslav in Ukraine in 1890. He was an economist and taught at the ULB. Having obtained a PhD in economic science in 1913, he worked for the Institut de Sociologie Solvay associated with the ULB. He was naturalised in 1923. This famous economist published various studies notably on economic history and the diamond industry. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he fled to the United States where he became a member of the Belgian delegation to the Bretton Woods conference in 1944. After returning to Belgium he became the vice president of the École de Commerce Solvay of the department of social, political and economic science of the ULB. He joined the board of the ULB, stepping down from his teaching functions. He was one of the main figures of economic science in Belgium and was a member of many scientific committees. He was also a founding member and later administrator of the Amis belges de l’Université hébraïque de Jérusalem. Serge Chlepner died in Brussels in 1964. (N.
