- Scope and content:
- This fonds mainly contains documentation and notes of Betty Garfinkels produced in the framework of her book Belgique, terre d’acceuil. We mainly find photocopies of original documents related to the immigration and relief for Jewish refugees, such as legal texts, circulars, press clippings, correspondence and the like, both dating back to the 1930s as well as from the post-war period. We also find an annotated manuscript of the book. The fonds also contains original archival material, dated mainly 1939-1940. We find i.a. invitations and circulars from the Foyer Israélite, the Comité d’Aide et d’Assistance aux Victimes de l’Antisémitisme en Allemagne (CAAVAA), some leaflets of the Conseil d’Associations juives de Bruxelles, the Foyer Israélite and the Comité d’Action pour la Défense des droits des juifs en Allemagne (comité de Bruxelles) and even a report of a meeting of an organisation, possibly of the CAAVAA.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Bassy (Betty) Bieloguski-Garfinkels was a historian. She was married to Grigorijs Garfinkels, who was the vice president and secretary of the Liège section of the Vereniging der Joden in België (VJB). As an employee of the Centre National des Hautes Études Juives she wrote Les Belges face à la persecution raciale, 1940-1944 (1965), a study about the persecution of the Jews in Belgium and the role of the VJB. The publication of the book caused a polemic within the Jewish communities; the apologetic analysis of the VJB was especially criticised. In 1974 Bieloguski-Garfinkels published the book Belgique, terre d’acceuil: problème du réfugié 1933-1940, a study on the Jewish refugees in the 1930s. (J.-P. Schreiber & R. van Doorslaer (eds.), De curatoren van het getto. De Vereniging van de joden in België tijdens de nazi-bezetting, Tielt, Lannoo, 2004.)
