This archival fonds is mainly composed of archives of the secretariat of the Institutum Iudaicum but also of (private) archives of former employees/presidents Omer Hamels, dom Georges Passelecq and Luc Dequeker. Apart from general documents concerning the creation of the institute (statutes, documents from the founding committee), minutes of meetings (1971-1994) and annual reports (1971-1991) of the governing bodies, we also note many files related to symposia organised by the institute (14 in total between 1974-1991).
In addition we also find documents (correspondence, notes, minutes of meetings, working documents) resulting from the contact and cooperation with similar organisations such as the Institut Universitaire d’Études du Judaisme Martin Buber, the International Consultative Committee of Organisations for Christian-Jewish Cooperation and the Israel Interfaith Association. The fonds also contains archival material (mainly correspondence, minutes of meetings, working texts) of the various working groups of the Institutum Iudaicum, such as the Groep ‘Een’ studiegroep voor Joods-Christelijke betrekkingen, the working group for the study of the Jewish tradition and the NFWO contact group for the study of Judaism. Among the bookkeeping records we note the usual series (balance sheets, cash books) as well as more interesting items regarding applications for subsidies and lists of donors. In this fonds we also note archival material (generally minutes of meetings and correspondence) of related organisations, such as the Katholieke Commissie voor Oecumene, the Katholieke Commissie voor de Betrekkingen met het Jodendom-Commission Catholique pour les Relations avec le Monde Juif and Interconfessioneel Contact-Contacts Interconfessionels.
Lastly we point out the private archival material produced by dom Georges Passelecq and Omer Hamels, often containing series of minutes of meetings, annual reports, … that are complementary to similar series found in the actual archives of the Institutum Iudaicum mentioned above. The documents produced by Hamels also contain statutes, reports, lists of members and correspondence of the Antwerpse contactgroep voor Joods-Christelijke betrekkingen.
- Archival history:
- The fonds is composed of deposits from 1995 and 2005.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Institutum Iudaicum was created on March 3, 1971. This inter-university centre, which also includes a Documentatiedienst voor de Betrekkingen tussen Joden en Christenen (‘documentation department for the relations between Jews and Christians’) is funded by an annual subsidy of the Central Jewish Consistory of Belgium, the Belgian Episcopal conference (Bisschoppenconferentie) and the Verenigde Protestantse Kerk (‘United Protestant Church’). The objective of the Institutum Iudaicum is to spread knowledge about Judaism and promote relations between the different religions. For this purpose the institute organises, among others, scientific conferences. A number of members of the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion work(ed) for the institute.
