- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Communauté israélite de Charleroi (Jewish community of Charleroi) was founded in 1918. Its members were primarily Jewish immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe who had come to Belgium to work in the coal mines. The community consisted of about 600 families on the eve of the Second World War. Community life flourished. The Shoah was a turning point. A large part of the members of the Jewish community of Charleroi were deported and murdered. Nevertheless the community rebuilt itself after the war. A synagogue was constructed in the rue Pige-au-Croly in 1961 and inaugurated two years later. The Foyer communautaire (‘community centre’) was also established at this address.
