- Scope and content:
- This fonds contains 33 rpm and 78 rpm records, 16 mm films, magnetic audio tapes and audio cassettes. The records primarily contain songs in Hebrew and Yiddish, as well as religious chants; the 16 mm films mainly consist of documentaries concerning Jewish institutions and productions regarding Jewish subjects. The collection also contains a number of films that have not yet been identified at the time of writing. The magnetic audio tapes contain recordings made during conferences as well as recordings of rabbi Pinchas Kahlenberg. In the collection of audio cassettes we notably find interviews with personalities of Belgian Judaism, as well as traditional fairy tales produced by the IMAJ. We also note various interviews, notably regarding the Bne-Mitzvah, conducted by Béatrice Godlewicz.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Institut de la Mémoire Audio-visuelle Juive (IMAJ) was founded in Brussels in 1984, following the creation of a similar institution in Paris a year earlier. Founding members were Paul Danblon, Gyora Glupczynski, Béatrice Godlewicz, Baron Georges Schnek and Simone Susskind. The objective of the institution is to provide schools and teachers with Jewish films and information regarding Judaism for the purpose of combating stereotypes, negationism and antisemitism. IMAJ Brussels took flight as an association thanks to a grant from the Communauté française (the French-speaking Community of Belgium). At present, the IMAJ has achieved its goal. The institution manages its own database – 5000 titles have been identified and hundreds of video tapes and DVDs are available for on-site consultation or loan. In addition, IMAJ organised numerous film screenings and cultural events, and supports the production of new films. (http://www.imaj.be.)
