- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Foyer israélite de Charleroi was created in December 1959 at the initiative of about twenty people, aged 18 to 40. These young people elected a provisional committee to coordinate the first activities of the Foyer in order to give a real boost to the association. The Jewish youth of Charleroi and the surrounding region was the target audience of the Foyer. By organising and mobilising them, the Foyer wished to struggle against their potential assimilation. The statutes of the Foyer israélite de Charleroi were published in the Moniteur belge. The Foyer moved into a rented house, which was inaugurated in June 1960. Many lectures were organised there, as well as various cultural activities such as balls and artistic events.
