- Administrative/biographical history:
- Darkenou (1957-1968?), literally ‘our way’, was a European Zionist youth movement affiliated with the World Conference of General Zionists and the Fédération de la Jeunesse juive de Belgique (FJJB). Darkenou was founded in Brussels in 1957 by former members of Hanoar Hatzioni. It was established as a non-profit association (asbl). In the early 1960s, Darkenou had its headquarters at rue de l’Évêque 26a; its president was Sam Topor and later Albert Perel. In 1967, its registered office was established at rue du Lombard 67 and its administrative office at boulevard du Midi 29. Its statutory mission was to struggle against assimilation. The association also focused on Israel and Zionism. It wanted to educate Jewish youth in Judaism and train future leaders of the community. Based on a core of a dozen founding members, the organisation counted nearly one hundred members in 1965-1967. Darkenou organised various activities, notably cultural activities such as lectures, a film club, Hebrew classes, but also social activities, sports activities such as ball games and swimming, and lastly, patriotic and remembrance activities such as participation to the commemorations in the Kazerne Dossin. Darkenou published a weekly periodical, which appeared irregularly. In 1967 the president of the association was M. Perel, its vice president Micha Eisenstorg. The association also had a treasurer, a cultural attaché, organisers, coordinators (animateurs) and one person responsible for stewardship (intendance). (Archival material related to Darkenou, including the sociological questionnaire on the structure and activities of Jewish organisations conducted by the CNHEJ, and documents concerning their disciplinary prerogatives produced by the Centre d’Histoire et d’Ethnologie Juridiques de l’Institut de Sociologie, 1968. Record Centre (BE / IEJ / Record Centre, “Mouvements de jeunesse”); Fonds Darkenou (BE / MJB / Fonds Darkenou).))
