- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Union des Étudiants Juifs de Belgique (UEJB) was founded in October 1945 and made into a non-profit association (asbl) on 20 June 1946. Among its founding members were Georges Schnek, Leopold Flam, J. Jedwab, S. Rozenwald and Lydia Nemirowsky. The goal of the UEJB was primarily social in nature. Its mission was to assist financially the student war victims by allowing them to continue their studies through scholarships. The organisation helped those students who were sorely lacking in financial resources. The scholarships awarded were actually donations, made primarily to foreign students who could not apply to Belgian institutions. The UEJB granted 23 scholarships in 1948 and 25 in 1950. The association was also involved in the repayment of the tuition fees and transport costs of the students. Initially the UEJB received subsidies from the Joint. The association attempted to be self-sufficient but would receive financial support from the Centrale d’Œuvres sociales juives of Brussels. The UEJB was one of the founding members of the World Union of Jewish Students. Today, the objective of the organisation is to organise Jewish students, combat antisemitism, get involved on behalf of oppressed Jewish communities and support Israel. For this purpose the UEJB organises conferences, demonstrations, an annual ball and other types of activities. There are sections in Brussels, Liège and Antwerp. The association publishes the periodical Kadima. (http://www.uejb.org/; Annexe au Moniteur belge, September 28, 1946, no. 2265 ; C.
